Freeman's Auctions Sale #6384: Freeman’s autumn American Art & Pennsylvania Impressionists auction promises a thoughtful complement of 19th and 20th-century American artists, works, styles, and price points. The sale is led by Alexander Phimister Proctor’s seminal bronze, Pursuit of the King of the Herd, and comprises the breadth of American art, including: portraiture by William Merritt Chase and Mariah Oakey Dewing; dramatic seascapes by William Trost Richards; and still life by Chase, Martin Johnson Heade, and John Frederick Peto. Additionally, the sale features sporting scenes by Edmund Henry Osthaus and Percival Leonard Rosseau; a strong selection of American illustration, with examples by Howard Pyle, Frank Schoonover, and N. C Wyeth; modernist works by George Bellows, Charles Burchfield, and Arthur Beecher Carles; and post-war highlights by the likes of Milton and Sally Michel Avery, Will Barnet, Robert Gwathmey, and Wolf Kahn. Lastly, as in seasons past, the sale will conclude with a world-class group of Pennsylvania Impressionist paintings, among them Daniel Garber’s Sumac Lane, Edward Willis Redfield’s Homestead, and John Folinsbee’s monumental Shad Fishermen.
