RR Auction

Gene Cernan's Apollo 17 Lunar Surface Data Card

A flight-certified Lunar Module (LM) Data Card Book used and annotated by Apollo 17 Commander Gene Cernan who was the last man to walk on the Moon has sold for $73,219 at RR Auction’s Space Exploration & Aviation event.

Carried to the lunar surface aboard the spacecraft Challenger, the ring-bound booklet accompanied Cernan during humanity’s final Moon landing in December 1972. Each of its 20 pages and covers is signed and flight-certified by Cernan, bearing the inscription: “Landed on the Moon, aboard the Apollo 17 LM ‘Challenger.’”

The Lunar Module (LM) Data Card Book includes handwritten notes made by Cernan while working at the Taurus–Littrow landing site. In a signed letter of authenticity, he confirmed that the booklet “was carried to the lunar surface and used aboard the spacecraft Challenger on the Moon,” with entries “written while on the surface” and traceable to the official mission transcripts.

Originating from The Eugene A. Cernan Space Collection, the artifact represents one of the few lunar-surface–used flight documents personally certified by an Apollo astronaut.
