Salão do Livro Antigo Antiquarian Book Fair Returns in Portugal

Salão do Livro Antigo

The Portuguese Salão do Livro Antigo antiquarian book fair returns for its second edition at the Municipal House of Culture in Coimbra this week November 6- 9.

Organized by the antiquarian bookseller Miguel de Carvalho, it will feature leading and emerging Portuguese antiquarian booksellers Bernardo Trindade, Art & Rare Books, Livraria Artes e Letras, Livraria Colofon, Livraria Olisipo, Livraria Gostar de Ler, Livraria In-Libris, Livraria Liliana Queiroz, Livraria Manuel Ferreira (Porto), and Livraria Miguel de Carvalho.

Running alongside will be a cultural program featuring talks by book scholars from both Portugal and Brazil including:

  • Uma outra história da imprensa a Oriente ('A different History of the press in the East') by António E. Maia do Amaral, Assistant Director of Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra, one of the most important libraries in Portugal
  • a look at printing and book trade in Bahia, Brazil, by the Brazilian historian Pablo Iglesias de Magalhães of the Federal University of Bahia
  • the history of Portuguese gastronomic bibliography by Guida Câncio from the University of Coimbra
  • The Ephemera Project and its role in promoting bibliophilia by ephemera collector Jose Pacheco Pereira

"The event will certainly be held again in 2026," said Miguel de Carvalho, "and it is very likely to expand with more Portuguese booksellers and, very probably, the participation of booksellers from other countries."

Last year, around 1,000 people attended the fair.
